At 700 acres, Burt's "Iron Horse Farms" in Fuquay-Varina has been in his family since the 1750s. It was a King George II land grant. Burt is president of Wake County Farm Bureau.

"The Forgotten history of the New Farmers of America has been restored and preserved for the future." Founded during the era of segregation, NFA helped guide black youth to become established in agriculture. It was originally begun at N.C. A. & T. during the 1926-27 academic year and later formed as a national organization in Tuskegee Alabama in 1935.
