James Baxter Hunt, Jr., has been governor of North Carolina for four terms. In an interview with Tuttle, Hunt looks back over his sixteen years as governor, the longest anyone has served in that position, and looks forward to his future after January 2001.

Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. asked the federal government to continue paying for maintenance dredging of Oregon Inlet, saying to do otherwise would threaten the fishing industry in northeastern North Carolina. The proposed 1983 budget which contains no money for the dredging would cause the inlet to close, and thereby shut down ongoing commercial fishing operations.

Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. is one of the first recipients of the new Lifetime Sportsman’s License which grants him full hunting and fishing privileges in North Carolina for life. The lifetime license was paid for by the individual members of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in appreciation of the Governor’s support of wildlife programs during his tenure.

Helms’ embrace of Israel in 1985 was a dramatic departure from his prior lack of support of Israel. Given his considerable influence in North Carolina’s Republican party, Helms’ about face made a powerful impact in the direction that modern conservative, right wing movement was to travel. Explained by the author were the reasons for Helms’ favoring a nation he had opposed giving support to since the 1970s.
