Since 1965, Becker has observed IBM’s significant contribution to the state’s economic growth. Less than 20 years ago, the southern region of the United States was greatly concerned about its basic economy, with low income and wages, little industry, and few jobs. But in less than two decades, the South has staged a remarkable economic recovery, with fundamental adjustments to create a solid foundation, which has led to growth in industry and agriculture. Mechanization, growth in capital investments and rural development have all lent a hand to this reverse in economic development.
