Title: Correspondence from Vilhjalmur Stefansson to Inglis Fletcher
Identifier: 0021-s1-b1-fd-i8 (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/86333)
Description: Correspondence from Vilhjalmur Stefansson to Inglis Fletcher. The bulk of the letter discusses business between Stefansson and Fletcher, but of note is Stefansson's discussion of Ada Blackjack. Blackjack was the sole survivor of the Wrangel Island Expedition which Stefansson organized. Stefansson discusses the accusation by Harold Noice that Blackjack tore pages out of Lorne Knight's diary and her money struggles. He also discusses receiving money from Noice and dividing it between Blackjack and the family of Knight who each wrote diaries detailing their experiences on the expedition. Stefansson used those diaries as the basis for the book he later wrote on the event. Noice appears to have profited off their diaries as well. Blackjack refuted that accusation by Nocie and remained impoverished most of her life. While Stefansson claimed to have paid Blackjack all she was owed, Blackjack maintained she was never compensated for her story.
