The narrative was originally written by Laura Augusta Jordan Applewhite fifty years after the Civil War ended. Applewhite discusses her recollections, her career as a teacher, the service of her brothers, and the war's impact on her family, friends, and life in Virginia and North Carolina, especially the Richmond area. Laura Augusta Jordan-Applewhite was the wife of John Thomas Applewhite. The document was transcribed by James W. Roebuck and the provenance of the original manuscript is detailed at the end.
