Dr. Barnwell, a board-certified surgeon in eastern North Carolina, noticed a great need for major medical facilities in the late 1960s. During his tenure at the Craven County Health Department, he worked tirelessly to educate the community about the importance of diet and exercise as a form of preventative healthcare. He also played a role in establishing the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and the medical community that flourishes here today. 83 minutes
