Description: Milo Manly, son of Alex and Caroline Sadgwar Manly. Alex Manly was part-owner and editor of the Wilmington Daily Record, an African American newspaper in Wilmington, N.C., during the late 19th century. Alex Manly and his brother, Frank, were forced to flee Wilmington on the eve of the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 after they were targeted due to their publication of an editorial which enraged violent white supremacists. The office of the Daily Record was sacked and burned as about 60 individuals, mostly black, lost their lives in the following violence while the local Republican government overthrown by the white supremacist dominated Democratic one. Date approximated. He and his wife later settled in Philadelphia, Pa., where they had their son, Manly.
