Description: R & J Beck, London, No. 5735. The Universal Microscope was introduced by Smith, Beck and Beck in 1862 to replace the Educational model. It was a unique design with a circular base and square cross section tube. The coarse focusing was by a fusee chain (visible on card) and the find focusing used a long lever to move the chain mechanism. The Universal was the least expensive model intended for student use.
