Description: A letter home from Charles F. Glover, a Union soldier in Company G of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry, describing the Battle of Roanoke Island. A portrait of Major General John A. Dix with a patriotic vignette in blue and red decorates the first page. Glover enlisted in Company G of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry with his parents' permission at the age of fifteen. The regiment saw action in North Carolina in the Battle of Roanoke Island, encamped outside of New Bern, and participated in the Battles of Kinston and White Hall. Glover was fatally wounded at the Battle of White Hall and died on December 18, 1862 at the age of 16.
