Description
Letter from George [last name unknown], a soldier in Company B of the 5th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, to his Aunt Maria, containing a description of Brig. Gen. John G. Foster's Expedition in North Carolina from December 11-20, 1862 to January 8, 1863. This includes the first Battle of Kinston, battles at Goldsboro, and the Battle of Whitehall at Seven Springs. These battles and skirmishes in between and how the soldiers were affected are described in great detail. George also mentions in the letter that he has an uncle, also named George, stationed with him in New Bern. This uncle is likely the husband or brother of his Aunt Maria.
