Description: Certificate recommending extension of furlough for Major Thomas Sparrow signed by S. S. Satchwell, Surgeon, Genl. Mil. Hosp. No. 2, Wilson, N.C. Approved by Colonel Stephen D. Pool in Goldsboro, N.C. Sparrow still suffered from chronic gastroenteritis with excessive debility and great emaciation, making him physically unable to report to his command. This extended his original furlough of 60 days granted in December 1864 by another 30 days. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
