Description: Report of Thomas Sparrow, Captain of the Washington Grays, August 28 [1861] giving his account of the Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries. Captain Sparrow reports about taking sixty five of his men on the Schooner Pantheon to Fort Hatteras. Sparrow discusses the assignment of picket duty, manning the guns, and the actions of his officers during the fight. He includes a list of the wounded and those taken as prisoners. Two of Captain Sparrow's men escaped, but the other sixty three men were captured including himself. The Civil War papers relate to the activities of Captain Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
