Description: Letter from Thomas A. Demill in New York to Captain Thomas Sparrow, Care Colonel J. Dimmick at Fort Warren, Boston. Demill writes that he regretted to learn from Major Gilliam that Sparrow is unwell. Demill says that he sent Sparrow candy, nuts, and tobacco. He asks if more valises are needed since more prisoners will be exchanged soon. Two prisoner, Biggs and Whitehurst, are to leave soon, and Demill wants them to stay with him on their way through rather than going to a hotel. Demill also gives his address so that Sparrow can stay with him if he is paroled. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
