Description: Letter from George Attmore Sparrow at Camp Holmes Landing near Raleigh, NC to his father Thomas Sparrow. George writes to his father to tell him about what happened last night. George relates all he knows about the incident, but says he was not actually there when it happened because he was down at the station. During the day, a steamer anchored opposite of a Confederate schooner and no one suspected any danger from it. The steamer contained about sixty Yankee soldiers who attacked that night. The Federal troops formed on land and no one was aware of their approach until they shot the sentinel on deck of the schooner. They succeeded in burning down some houses and in burning the schooner. George says he doesn’t understand why they would put an artillery Company on picket without any arms and that this was the third attempt to destroy the schooner. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
