Description: A North Carolina Department of Transportation ferry, the Hatteras, makes a run loaded with passengers across the Croatan Sound Thursday afternoon. The state will use the World War II vintage landing craft along with another to shuttle persons from Manns Harbor to Manteo. The William Umstead bridge usually used by travelers was damaged when apparently hit by a tug causing the three-mile span to be closed.
