Vial case
Title: Vial case
Identifier: Country Doctor Museum   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/14350)
Description: In Naval medicine it is important for doctors to have access to a wide variety of medicines at all times. This is because, both at war and in the field, conditions are anything but predictable. This case contains 34 vials, all issued by the United States Navy Medical Department, that contain hypodermic tablets, pills, tinctures, and powders; specifically, the medicines in the kit include quinine sulphate, ipecac powder, bismuth, opium, tannic acid, morphine sulphate, and digitalis tincture. Also included is a hypodermic syringe kit. The vial case was manufactured between 1886 and 1921 by George Tiemann & Company in New York city and was used by Dr. Charles St. John Butler, a country doctor from Tennessee who served as commanding officer of the Naval Medical School and as a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy.
