Description: Commander Hines, a native of Wilmington, N.C., entered the USNA from the US Naval Reserves. He discusses his experiences at the USNA, assignment to the USS COLE, convoy duty in the North Atlantic, invasion of North Africa, and the invasion of Italy at Salerno. Late in 1944 he became executive officer of the USS SUMNER and he comments on the invasion at Leyte Gulf, being hit by a kamikaze in the Philippines, and the end of the war in Tokyo Bay. For the post-war period, he reports on command of the USS KEITH on patrol off Iwo Jima, minesweeping duty along the China coast, and decommissioning of his division. He also discusses various duty stations in the United States, liaison to the Turkish Navy at Ankara, and teaching assignments at the USNA. Interviewer: Donald R. Lennon.
