Biographical/historical information
William A. Graham was born April 18, 1875, in Hillsborough, N.C., to John W. and Rebecca Cameron Graham. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1895 with the degree of A.B., and from the medical department at the University of Pennsylvania in 1899. He entered medical practice in Durham in 1900. On December 3, 1902, Graham married Anne Cameron Shepard and later had two sons by her: William Alexander and John Washington. Graham continued practicing medicine until his death in Durham on September 19, 1911.
Scope and arrangement
The collection is comprised of Dr. William A. Graham's report of a typhoid cholecystitis (gall bladder) operation and his patient's recovery. Graham assembled the report as an illustration of typhoid fever as an acute infection of the gall bladder. The collection includes Graham's general discussion of typhoid fever and the family background and medical history notes on his patient, O'Berry Ashley, at Watts Hospital in Durham, N.C. (July 26 - Oct. 3, 1907). Graham describes Ashley's symptoms, notes his gall bladder operation, and comments on his period of convalescence.
The bulk of the collection consists of pages containing Dr. Graham's dietary and medical orders for Ashley and bedside notes compiled by a nurse. These notes record the patient's temperature, his diet, the medication he took, and his progress prior to his dismissal from the hospital.
