Biographical/historical information

The International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons, an international, inter-racial, and inter-denominational organization with approximately 30,000 members in 1,700 circles, was founded in 1886. The Greenville circle is the Patient Circle. The Purposes of the order are to promote Christian activities and help develop spiritual lives. Many of the local circles operate camps, hospitals, homes for the aged, educational programs, and other types of charitable service committees and institutions. The circles also provide scholarships to students studying for the ministry, students in the health care field, and North American Indian students. The publication of the international order is the Silver Cross.

Scope and arrangement

The King's Daughters and Sons, Patient Circle Records consist mainly of the minutes of the Greenville circle. These minutes, recorded in volumes and in typescript form (1888-1981), pertain to the activities at monthly meetings, which usually were of a routine nature. The minute books also contain membership rolls, reports of committees (visiting, jail, hospital, etc.) and constitutions and bylaws. Annual reports presented at state conventions (1923-1978, undated) summarize the group's yearly activities and accomplishments. Of particular interest are the treasurer's records (1910-1923), which list items that the Patient Circle purchased for the poor and disabled in the Greenville area. The collection also contains volumes listing dues paid by members (1900-1923) andmembership rosters and committee assignments (1929-1930; 1931). Also in the collection are scattered correspondence (1945-1979, undated) and miscellaneous material, including a speech (undated), undated newspaper clippings, and various publications and programs (1924-1964).

Among the records are two scrapbooks. One of them (1927-1942) contains newspaper clippings, minutes, and photographs pertaining to state conventions and activities of various circles (1927-1942). Another scrapbook (1957-1967) compiled by the Patient Circle contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and printed material reflecting its activities.
