Both of the occurrences of this term appear in Hariot’s discussion of the customs of the Native Americans, on the bottom of pg. 753 and the top of pg. 754. Hariot is referring to a form of short hoe that the women use while sitting down. The OED cites both of Hariot’s use of the word as examples. - Matt
This could be anything from a shell hoe (see recreated hoe in attached image) to a simple digging stick. DeBry made an engraving of a Le Moyne painting of Timucuan Indians using hoes (How they till the soil and plant) that I think is a rather fanciful representation of their hoes - Dr. Charles Ewen
