History of the Project

This project was inspired by the late first dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences W. Keats Sparrow (1942-2009) and his desire that East Carolina University should become the center for research on the history and heritage of eastern North Carolina.

Dr. Tise partnered with Joyner Library's Digital Collections team in 2013. The website was originally built to allow Dr. Tise and his graduate students to easily annotate the high quality scans of the text.

Many people have contributed to this project over the years, including Larry E. Tise, E. Thomson Shields, Charles Ewen, Stanley Riggs, and Michael Reece, as well as several graduate research assistants including Marshall Lamm, Erin Burnette, Andrew Shaughnessy, and Morgan Pierce.
