Beere – This term occurs once in Hariot and twice in the White text. White’s references on pg. 765 and 770 are to the brew kept aboard the ships for drinking during the trans-Atlantic voyage, since fresh water would be hard to come by. Hariot’s use of the term occurs in the entry on “pagatowr”; Hariot discusses the use of “pagatowr” to create various alcoholic beverages with the assistance of malt and hops. The key to making beer was the addition of malt and hops to the fermented grain to give it a bitter flavor; without the malt and hops, the drink was known as “ale.” See “mault” and “hops.” - Matt
