Pooneno (fl. 1584-1585),; Barlowe’s account of the 1584-1585 Roanoke Expedition describes Pooneno as a “free Lorde,” that is, not subject to more powerful kings of the land, of the Town of Chowanoake, near the Nomopana River (probably the upper part of the modern Albemarle Sound). However, Quinn notes that Pooneno was actually likely not the chief of the Chowanoake (though he does not specify the reasons for this conclusion), but rather the chief of the Moratucs or the Weapemeocs. ;
