Piemacum / Piemacum / Piemacum / Piemacum / Piemacum
Additional Notes
Piemacum/Piamacum:; Piemacum was the Algonquian king of the Ponouike tribe, which is thought to have lived between the Pamlico and Neuse Rivers. Piemacum and his tribe were allied with that of the western Neiosioke against Wingina’s people, many of whom had been killed in raids by the Ponouike, though evidently two years before the arrival of the English a treaty had been made between the warring factions, temporarily bringing an uneasy peace. According to the testimony of Wanchese and Manteo to the English, at one point while hostilities were still active, evidently the Ponouike invited a large number of Sequotans to his town for a feast, but then ambushed and slaughtered the men, and took the women and children captive. It is hard to verify the veracity of this story as Wanchese and Manteo were evidently using it to convince the English to attack Piemacum’s town, kill its inhabitants, and capture their goods.;
