Notes |
Though Harriot mentions seeing partridges, the species is not native to the Americas and was introduced during the colonial period as a game bird. John White did not leave us any image labeled “partridge” so the exact bird Harriot described is a mystery. The bird I have selected, the yellow-billed cuckoo displays similar marking to some members of the partridge family. Though the partridge is much less arboreal than the cuckoo, Harriot may have believed that the cuckoo’s limited terrestrial feeding in North Carolina may have been due to a variation in landscape. |
