Monkey/Monkie (fl. 1587) ; When John White reached Smerwick, Ireland, returning to England from the Roanoke colony in 1587 to urge the sending of supply ships, his own fly-boat, having just crossed the Atlantic, was in too poor shape to continue safely on. Thus, White, sensing the urgency of his mission for the safety of the colonists, left behind his crew and obtained passage for himself on the Monkey from Smerwick to Southhampton, England on the 1st of November, 1587, passing by Lands End, up through the Severne, landing in Martasew, in Cornwall on the 5th , and arriving in Southampton on the 8th of November.;
