Iohn Hewes

Additional Notes

Hewes, John (Iohn): ; John Hewes is only mentioned by Barlowe in this one instance as one of the gentlemen of the company on the 1584 Roanoke Expedition under Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe. Quinn notes that one Lieutenant Hewes accompanied Raleigh on his expedition to Guiana in 1595. It is not explicitly said, but implied that these two Hewes, both being gentlemen in Raleigh’s household and service, could likely have been the same man. However, Quinn does not present any direct evidence of this link, and so the claim remains only speculation.;
