Additional Notes

Hares – This term, which occurs 4 different times in Hakluyt, is never far from “conies,” which suggests that the distinction between the two terms was very important to Barlowe and Hariot, the two explorers responsible for cataloguing the resources of the New World. Hares tend to be larger than rabbits/conies, with larger ears and a wilder disposition; hares also nest above ground and give birth to fully-functional young, whereas rabbits burrow underground and give birth to furless, blind young. See “conies.” - Matt
