Unlike barque and pinnace, there is no hard and fast rule for identifying a frigate by rigging. The term applied for centuries to a light or swift vessel. The Grenville text mentions two "frigats" captured by the company while at S. John. The one illustrated here may been referred to in the text as the vessel Ralph Lane used to fetch salt from the shores of Roxo Bay. |
