Francis Brooke

Additional Notes

Brooke, Francis: ; Francis Brooke served as the high treasurer of the 1585 Roanoke Expedition under Richard Grenville. This position was evidently one of considerable honor, ranked with that of lieutenant (the position occupied by Ralph Lane). Though not of the same status of military command, he evidently still held significant power and commanded an under treasurer. Quinn speculates that he may be one Captain Francis Brooke, a London gentleman and privateer of the Eleanor and William Bonaventure. Given the number of gentlemen who took part in this expedition who were of Raleigh’s household and consequently made names for themselves as privateers, this is very likely. ;
