Notes [NB-VJB] Possibilities include bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), Atlantic white cedar or Juniper (Chamaecyparis thyoides (L.) BSP ). Fir trees, Aibes sp., are found in NC only in the higher mountains. White cedar is very pliable and rot resistant. Some of these trees reached great size before they were nearly ‘logged out’ after the Civil War when they were a prime source of roof shingles.; Hariot p.22 “Firre trees fir for masts of ships, some very tall & great.”;
