Hariot; p.23 Hariot gives no further explanation, just a listing. This tree is presumably Elm. The American elms are sufficiently similar to English elm, that this tree could be readily identified. The most likely elm that Hariot would have seen is: Ulmus americana L, White elm or American elm. Radford, 1968. p.387. Other possible trees, but much less likely, would be U. alata Michaux (Winged elm), or Hackberry, Celtis spp.; |
