Additional Notes

Dorothy (fl. 1584-1585) ; The Dorothy was a 50 ton vessel, described as “a small barke” owned by Sir Walter Raleigh. It has been speculated that she was the pinnace used on Raleigh’s initial 1584 exploratory expedition to Roanoke, commanded by Arthur Barlowe, but there is no solid evidence for this theory. The Dorothy was involved in the 1585 Roanoke Voyage under Richard Grenville, likely captained again by Arthur Barlowe. After the departure from Plymouth in early April, the fleet was scattered, not meeting again until early July. In the period in between it is thought possible that the Dorothy was involved with the Lion in marooning thirty-two men on Croatan in mid-June when the vessels were running short on food. It is also thought that the Dorothy may have perhaps accompanied the Lion and her captain George Raymond North to Newfoundland where Bernard Drake was met up for privateering exploits in which several Portuguese and French vessels were taken. Pinning her movements down proves difficult as the majority of the fleets vessels often go unaccounted for-for large parts of the records.;
