Bookes

Additional Notes

Bookes – This term appears twice: first on pg. 746 among a list of items tossed overboard to prevent their ships from sinking, and second in Hariot’s list of tools beyond the comprehension of the Native Americans. In either case, “books” could be taken to mean anything from books in the most traditional sense, to ship’s logs, to blank ledgers used by merchants for tabulating their accounts. The occurrence of “bookes” in Hariot is particularly notable because different versions of the Hakluyt text alternate between “bookes” and “hookes,” leaving some question as to what that particular item actually was (since the Native Americans did not have the writing systems or printing press technology necessary for books, nor did they have the metallurgy skills for making metal hooks, whether small fishing hooks or larger hooks for use aboard ship). - Matt
