Additional Notes

Alanson:; Alanson was a French merchant of Hispaniola, a friend of Simon Fernandez (the Portuguese navigator for several of the Roanoke Voyages), and likely one of Richard Grenville’s contacts in the Americas. Very little is known of him, but evidently he lived had lived in Hispaniola at some point in time previous to 1587. Midway through the 1587 voyage Governor John White wished to stop at “S. Germans Baye” to obtain supplies, but Fernandez refused, saying that instead they would stop at Hispaniola to meet with Alanson and obtain supplies there. However, the little fleet passed Hispaniola by, and when Fernandez was asked whether they would meet his friend he replied that Alanson had been sent back to Spain and was thought to be dead. This deception increased the substantial dislike White developed for Fernandez.
