"Once, hardy islanders made a life on the shores of Shackleford Banks--until a series of storms forced them to leave, Every five years, their descendants return to the site of Diamond City to remember." John Shackleford acquired the stretch of barrier island in the late 1700s. Formerly known as Lookout Woods, Diamond City was the largest community on the island.
