The Gratitude Train, forty-nine boxcars long, was France’s gift-filled gesture to America for its assistance in the closing days of World War II. Participants in the arrival of North Carolina’s boxcar included Governor Kerr Scott and News and Observer editor Jonathan Daniels. Preserved items such as this boxcar and a woodcut portrait of Abraham Lincoln continue to testify international goodwill.

The dulcimer, often associated with Western North Carolina, found places other than the region’s lumber mills and was found long before the nineteenth century. Introduced in Europe by returning Crusaders, its origins can be traced back to Greece and the Near East.

More about Moravians can be mined in the million pages plus of documents chronicling everyday life in nearly every day detail. How manuscripts are conserved can be better understood by factors accounting for their unique appearance and unusual fragility.
