In 1995, North Carolina started its Business Court when the North Carolina state legislature added funds for another state Superior Court judge. The Business Court has become a model for many other states, including Georgia and Delaware.

In Sylva, North Carolina, Jackson Paper is a paper mill that produces paper for the construction of corrugated containers. The plant is one of three paper mills in the United States that does not discharge waste into surface or city water supplies. Rather, all of the water the plant uses is recycled, as is the material they use to make paper.

The eastern region of North Carolina increasingly relies upon East Carolina University economically. Though it is the third largest UNC system school, it is still the underdog when compared to other schools like UNC Chapel Hill and NC State. ECU football has become a major social event for the region and head coach Ruffin McNeill works hard to ensure that his players perform well on the field and in the classroom.
