Bowman Gray and his wife Nathalie built their home, Graylyn Estate, on land purchased from Reynolda Inc. in 1925. The estate was given to the Bowman Gray Medical School in 1946, then to Wake Forest University in 1972. Following reconstruction after a 1980 fire, the building became Wake Forest's conference center.

North Carolina ranks as the nation's leading producer of brick. In 1983, nearly 840 million brick were produced, compared to 5.8 billion nationwide. About 57 percent of North Carolina's production is used within the state.

Christopher C. Fordham enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1943. He received his M.D. from Harvard in 1951, and after service in the military and other university positions, he became dean of the School of Medicine at Chapel Hill in 1969. In 1980 he became chancellor of the university.

Allen Mebane and his associates founded Unifi, Inc. in February 1971 in Greensboro. The company's purpose was to develop new and improved equipment to texturize raw polyester fiber more efficiently and more cost-effectively than the competition. In 1884, Heriot Clarkson opened a law office in Charlotte. Clarkson was later an associate justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court. Today, Clarkson's firm known as Parker, Poe, Thompson, Bernstein, Gage & Preston is one of the oldest law firms in continuous practice in North Carolina.
