The Western Electric Company is the fifth largest employer in North Carolina and the eighth largest in the nation. In 1969, the company observes its one hundredth anniversary. It is an integral part of the Bell System and serves as its manufacturing and supply unit. Western Electric has operated manufacturing facilities in Burlington since 1946 and in Winston-Salem since 1950.

At its Raleigh facility, ITT Telecommunication Transmission Products is engaged in research, development, and the manufacture of complex communications equipment and systems. Superior Continental Corporation opened in Hickory in 1954 as the manufacturing and supply arm of Continental Telephone Corporation, the country's third largest independent phone company. Other plants have been built at Catawba and Rocky Mount, as well as in Iowa and Texas. The company is a major producer of telecommunication equipment and supplies.

Boren Clay Products Company, founded in 1946 by Orton and Addison Boren, has headquarters in Pleasant Garden near Greensboro. The privately-held company makes over 320 million brick a year. Boren makes one of every nine brick produced in the country, and one out of every four produced in North Carolina.

Early in 1969, Riegel Paper began building a new Packaging Division plant in Charlotte, and by July 1969, the company decided to move the national headquarters of the Packaging Division there also. This division accounted for over 40 percent of the company's 1968 sales of $150 million. The Charlotte plant will produce folding cartons, envelopes and other packing materials for use in the hosiery and soft-goods industry.

Fred B. Gray founded Gray Concrete Pipe Company, Inc. in Thomasville in 1908. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of concrete pipe on the East Coast. Thomasville remains the company's headquarters, but it also operates production facilities in three other states and serves an area from Pennsylvania to South Carolina.

In 1905, Lunsford Richardson, a Greensboro druggist, went into business to sell his own medicines. He called his company Vick Family Remedies Company; in 1960, the name was changed to Richardson-Merrell, Inc. Under Richardson, and later his son Smith, the company expanded to eleven U.S. and eighteen foreign plants of a $340 million enterprise.

In 1969, the company is a leading producer in manmade yards and fibers and ranks as the fifth largest North Carolina based corporation. In 1968, Abbott Laboratories of North Chicago opened two plants at Rocky Mount. Before deciding on this city, the company had studied around 200 sites in sixteen states. The decision to come to North Carolina was based on availability of personnel, land cost, community appeal, and good transportation facilities. A third plant which is scheduled to open in 1970 is under construction at Laurinburg. Abbott is a manufacturer of health care products.
