Abstract:
The National Municipal League and Look Magazine have designated Winston-Salem an All-America City. This is the third North Carolina municipality to receive the award. Asheville won in 1951, and Laurinburg won in 1956. Most cities win the award largely on the basis of one project, but Winston-Salem won for its work on eight projects.

In 1771, Johann Matthew Miksch opened a tobacco shop in the Moravian village of Salem along with a log-cabin tobacco manufactory. Both buildings have now been restored and authentically furnished as part of the Old Salem Restoration project. To date, eight village buildings have been restored to their original appearance.

The Masland Duraleather Company, founded in Philadelphia in 1914 by Walter E. Masland, manufactured pyroxylin coated fabric. Today the company is recognized as the leader in the field. The company's newest plant, which will open in Mocksville, will be the largest and most modern vinyl fabric plant in the South.

Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) opened its latest fiber glass plant at Shelby in 1959. The PPG Carolina plant is the world's largest producer of fiber glass yarn employing the direct melt system exclusively. The plant is designed for twenty-four melting furnaces.

The company opened a plant in Toronto, Canada in 1941, a second in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 1954, and in 1959, a third in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Products made at this facility include pocket watches, electric alarm clocks, and interval timers.

Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., with general offices located in Spray in Rockingham County, is a major producer of quality textiles. The company operates nine mills, with five in the area of Spray, and employs over 6,000 workers. The company's two nationally known brands are Fieldcrest and Karastan. Fieldcrest is the only company in the nation with a complete line of domestic products for bed and bath, including blankets, sheets, bedspreads, towels, and bath rugs.
