In 1935, Harvey L. Barnes founded the Maola Milk & Ice Cream Company in New Bern. The dairy company began with two trucks and seven employees, and grew into a multi-million-dollar company. Maola’s dairy products are tested for flavor and quality at the company’s certified laboratory.

Thad Garner, president of T. W. Garner Food Company in Winston-Salem, began his company in 1929 selling barbecue sauce. As the business began to expand, his barbecue sauce evolved into a hot sauce called Texas Pete. Today, the company produces a line of forty different products.

Cates began his PPG career at the company’s Shelby fiber glass plant, which opened in 1967. Heralded as the most sweeping change in the nation’s tax laws in two decades, new tax-reform legislation will drastically curtail the ability of state and local governments to finance their activities through the traditional means of selling securities whose interest income is exempt from federal income taxes. Activity in the North Carolina market has not been consistent with national market activity. Tax-exempt municipal bonds remain an extremely attractive investment for individuals in North Carolina.

The late 1970s were a troubled time for The Bahnson Company in Winston-Salem, which since 1915 has been designing, manufacturing, marketing and installing in-plant environmental control systems for industries. Bahnson partnered with the Swedish company, Flakt, Inc., and became Flakt, Inc./Bahnson Division in 1981. The division’s president, J.
