Burroughs Wellcome Company was founded in London in 1880 by two American pharmacists, Silas Burroughs and Henry Wellcome. In the 104 years since its founding, the company has been recognized as a leader in pharmaceutical research and production. Its corporate headquarters in Research Triangle Park also houses its research laboratories, and its manufacturing division is in Greenville, North Carolina.

Squibb Corporation’s penicillin formulation plant in Kenly is a key part of the pharmaceutical company’s worldwide network of research laboratories, manufacturing plants and distribution centers. The Kenly plant produces antibiotics in capsule and tablet formulations. Several innovations at the plant were designed to enhance pharmaceutical manufacturing efficiency and productivity.

Glaxo Inc., one of North Carolina’s newest pharmaceutical companies, moved its headquarters from Great Britain to Research Triangle Park in August 1983. Glaxo is among the world’s top twenty pharmaceutical companies and produces more than 250 products. A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is being constructed in Zebulon, and is designed to permit additional growth and expansion.

Ajinomoto U.S.A., Inc., located in Raleigh, began operations in 1982 as the only United States plant with the technical capabilities to produce a wide variety of pharmaceutical amino acids. The Japan-based company first developed monosodium glutamate (MSG), is a leader of research, and currently holds sixty-five percent of the world’s amino acids market. Before opening in Raleigh, all amino acids were imported from Japan.

Founded in 1978 by Ren Babcock, the company was originally meant to support small IBM business computer users in Wake County, but became involved in political software when the North Carolina Democratic Party began looking for ways to communicate with their supporters.

The facility will produce a variety of spunbonded nonwoven textiles used in the automotive and roofing industries, in carpet floor coverings and in other industrial applications. Duncan-Parnell, Inc. was founded in Charlotte by Charles W. Duncan in 1946 to supply high quality equipment, supplies and printing services to engineers, architects, designers and surveyors. Duncan is a pioneer in what is now known as reprographics, the combination of drafting graphics and photographic reproduction. Edward F. Parnell, a manufacturing engineer, joined the firm as manager in 1960.

The Nello L. Teer Company began in 1909 as a small grading construction company in Durham, and grew to become a worldwide enterprise. To complement construction, the company developed quarries to produce crushed aggregate plus sand and gravel operations in eastern North Carolina. As a roadbuilder, the Teer Company has constructed more than 14,000 miles of highway.

Consolidated Diesel Company was formed in October 1980 to manufacture two families of advanced technology diesel engines. Located north of Rocky Mount, the company manufactures cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and connecting rods. These components are assembled into engines which are then tested, painted and upfitted with accessories.
