Spencer Robbins and his brothers Grover and Harry Robbins are known for their development ventures in the Blowing Rock area. The Robbins brothers converted the Tweetsie railroad into a tourist attraction, and developed ski slopes on Beech Mountain. This article discusses the history of the Robbins’ business ventures, and highlights Spencer’s contributions.

The cost of constructing interstate highway interchanges have escalated steadily during the past couple decades, while North Carolina Highway Fund revenues have failed to keep pace. Maintaining the eighty-thousand-mile North Carolina highway system now consumes the bulk of available road dollars. This article discusses the highway system, construction, maintenance, and financing.

Since 1937, Roanoke Island has been home to “The Lost Colony,” the late Paul Green’s outdoor drama about Sir Walter Raleigh’s abortive efforts to establish a permanent English colony in America. Green called the play a “symphonic drama” and wrote fifteen others, six of which are still produced annually. The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright died May 4 at age 87.

The Travel and Tourism Division of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, established in 1937, advertises in out-of-state publications to attract tourists, and operates five Welcome Centers on the major interstate entrances to the state. The late Grover C. Robbins, Jr. renovated the Tweetsie locomotive and railroad in 1957, turning it into Blowing Rock’s most popular tourist attraction. The route of what came to be known as Tweetsie was the Linville River Railway division of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. The train now operates along a closed circuit and is maintained by Frank Coffey.

Recent statistics from North Carolina’s State Historic Sites indicate that the history business is booming. In 1980, there was a ten-percent increase in the number of visitors to the twenty sites operated by the Historic Sites Section of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. This recent trend may be due to the inexpensive costs of visiting state historic sites, better publicity, and improvements in facilities and interpretations of the sites themselves.

The Clingendael Investment Corporation, a Dutch firm of which Julius Verwoerdt is chairman, is building an elegant resort near Chapel Hill called Hotel Europa. Verwoerdt is a Dutch entrepreneur who lives in Durham, and has owned the largest chain of hotels in Holland. Hotel Europa will have a significant impact to the Research Triangle area because of the distinct European influence of the ownership, management and design.
