I know of no one else his age who can recreate their Washington childhood experiences in such detail. Ford married my cousin, the late Isabel Blount Carter Worthy, also of Washington. I met with him, his grandson Thomas Hester and my son Samuel, at his home in Raleigh shortly after his wife passed away in October 2021.--Sam Mordecai, Washington native" The article is in the form of an oral history interview.

An area between Rocky Mount and Tarboro is considered the primary spawning ground for Tar River Shad. There are two species of shad in the Tar Pamlico region; namely, American and hickory. Although the Roanoke River experiences larger quantities of shad, the Tar River is better rated for its variety, particularly in regard to mature female white "roe" shad.

Before King Chicken, the location operated as a hugely popular hamburger and hot dog stand under Stancil Lilley. Granville Lilley began what is now King Chicken in 1958. In 2018, Zack Mixon became the current owner.
