The museum houses a prominent 1904 shad boat, representing the official state historic boat in North Carolina. Elizabeth City also offers access to the Dismal Swamp State Park. The Dismal Swamp is the largest remaining swamp in the eastern United States.

North Carolina ranks 5th in the United States in watermelon production. Of more than 1,200 watermelon varieties, the vast majority are grown in North Carolina. Seedless watermelons were developed back in 1951. Noted in the article are the current watermelon festivals in the state and several farms devoted to watermelon production; namely, LizCo Farms in Rocky Mount, Howell Farming company in Goldsboro and Murfreesboro Farms.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service's New and Emerging Crops Program helps facilitate research and identifies new crops that sustainably viable to North Carolina farmers. Recent attention has been given to sesame, grown typically in Texas and Oklahoma. Sesame has some interesting benefits to growers, including drought and deer resistance and little in the way of additional equipment other than what is generally used for growing small grains.
