Meredith Knowles Abramson, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Erwin Middle School in Rowan County, is the 2003-2004 winner of the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching. The award, created in 1966, honors the educational contributions of Terry Sanford. Abramson received the award for her creation of a project that combined photography, creative writing, and computer technology to help students develop their writing skills. Other finalists were Allison Rollinson (Dare County); Deanna Cook Shue (Cabarrus County); and Patricia Harrison Taylor (Nash/Rocky Mount).

Tommy O'Briant Freeman II, received the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence for 2003. Freeman is a second-grade teacher at Peterson Elementary School in Red Springs. The annual award recognizes, rewards and promotes excellence in teaching and advocacy for the profession. He and four other finalists each received a cash award of $10,000. USA TODAY twice named him one of the top forty teachers in the country. Outside the classroom, Freeman serves his community as an elected town commissioner.

The All-USA Teacher First Team, sponsored by USA TODAY, recognizes teachers who \"develop ways to ratchet up learning and make academics get real.\" Elisabeth Hadley, a second-grade teacher at Haw Elementary School in Buncombe County, was one of 20 teachers nationwide selected for the team. Award winners received a trophy, $2,500 for their schools, and $500 for themselves. Hadley has taught school for twenty-three years and was recently honored for being a \"model teacher.\"

James Brooks, who teaches at Wilkes County's West Wilkes High School, is the 2005 winner of the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration. Brooks' award was for his development of a photojournalism class. The Sanford award, created in 1966 and now considered the NCEA's most prestigious award, honors educational contributions of Terry Sanford.

James Brooks of Wilkes County is the 2005 winner of the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration. Two other finalists in the competition were Angles V. Currin, a teacher at the Concord Middle School in Cabarrus County, and Cynthia C. Rigsbee, who teaches at Chewning Middle School in Durham County. Currin developed a pen-pal program in an attempt to increase her students' reading and writing skills. To provide her students with high-interest reading material, Rigsbee wrote the book SHOOTING STAR.

The award was in recognition of his outstanding instructional expertise, attention to diversity, dedication to life-long learning, and creativity and innovation. The award carries a prize of $25,000. Brooks also was awarded the 2005 Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration.

James Bell, an eighth grade English teacher at Chowan Middle School, Chowan County, is the 2007 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. As Teacher of the Year, he will spend the school year traveling around the state talking with others in the education field and parents. Three other teachers who were selected as Regional Teachers of the Year will serve on the 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year Team. They are Beth Howard, a visual arts teacher at Dixon Elementary School in Onslow County; Sonya Kiser, an English teacher at North Johnston High School in Johnston County; and Shawn Watlington, a history teacher at Greensboro Middle College, in Guilford County.
