While textiles and furniture have dominated North Carolina's manufacturing scene for decades, a new industry is emerging--plastics. The state ranks seventh nationally in shipments sent by plastics manufacturing companies and eighth in the number of people employed in the industry.

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site at Rodanthe on Hatteras Island is the most complete of the few remaining stations on the East Coast. These stations were the predecessors of the Coast Guard Service, and the stories of the daring rescues they performed are legendary. Chicamacomico closed in 1954 after seventy years of service. Today, the Chicamacomico Historical Association keeps the memory of the station and the men who served there alive through living history performances.

Already the state ranks first in contract research organizations in the country; second in agricultural biotechnology research; third in biomanufacturing; and fourth in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In 1986, Monica Doss went to work for the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, an organization formed by the North Carolina Department of Commerce. At that time the organization had no other employees, and membership was around 100 companies. Stepping down as CEO in May 2008, Doss leaves the largest entrepreneurial support organization in the nation, now with 20 employees serving over 5,000 members who represent 1,100 companies.

Although North Carolina is known for textiles, furniture, and biotechnology, agriculture remains the state's number one industry, accounting for $68 billion annually. However, since 1990, over a million acres of forest and farms have been lost, mostly to development, and in 2005, over 1,000 farms were lost, the most in any state. To preserve what is left the state is working on projects to help make farming more profitable.
