Adam O’Fallon Price is the former bassist for The Mayflies USA, a power pop band in Chapel Hill that earned national notices in the late nineties. Now Price debuts as a novelist, drawing on his band experience with some authorial sleight of hand. The Grand Tour is a book about a washed-up fiction writer who gets a second wind from a Vietnam War memoir and a fan he meets on his book tour.

Evangelize Durham, a coalition of thirty-one mostly black local churches, is leading an old-fashioned tent revival. Every evening in August, a different pastor is leading a service. Evangelize Durham is also holding a clothing drive, food distribution, and workshops on topics like domestic abuse, substance abuse, and HIV screening.

A large hole opened up on Glenn Road in northeast Durham after heavy storms hit the area last Sunday. The soil beneath the road became so drenched that it completely washed away in the stream. The road will be closed until the Department of Transportation conducts an engineering study to determine appropriate actions.

Alison McGhee and other tattoo artists at Glenn’s Tattoo Service in Carrboro are often asked to cover up old tattoos with new ones. For her new children’s book Tell Me a Tattoo Story, McGhee asked social media followers to post their favorite tattoo and tell the story behind it. Some of them were about tattoos that they regretted, either because the art was horrible or the sentiment behind it had changed.

Tara Dunsmore was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and underwent a double mastectomy. After her breast reconstruction, Dunsmore trained in advanced 3-D areola tattooing and founded Pink Ink Tattoo in Raleigh. Now she performs realistic-looking areola tattoos on breast cancer survivors from across the country.

Bombshell Beer Company is North Carolina’s only all-female-owned microbrewery with all female brewers. Ellen Joyner, Michelle Miniutti, and Jackie Hudspeth started the brewery in Holly Springs with hopes of bringing more women into the craft beer world.

Fig trees are popular with homeowners in the Durham area because they are cold-hardy, prolific, and flourish in a range of soils. Starting in late July or early August, the fruit begins to ripen on the tree. There are five fig trees rooted on public property within Durham city limits, ripe for the picking.

Daniel Hart is a musician who lived in Chapel Hill from 2002-2009, crafting gorgeous songs with his band The Physics of Meaning. His more recent work has included composing music for ads and short films, but this year Hart wrote the score for Disney’s remake of the 1977 movie Pete’s Dragon. This is Hart’s biggest project featuring the largest orchestral ensemble with which he has ever recorded.

Carrboro’s Squirrel Nut Zippers led the swing music revival of the late nineties, making their way into mainstream radio. The shadow of litigation, acrimonious departures, and the divorce of Jimbo Mathus and Katharine Whalen caused the band to fall apart a few years after their second album Hot. Only two members of the original band are on board for this year’s twentieth anniversary tour for Hot.

Oscar Diaz of Jose and Sons, the premier Mexican-Southern restaurant in downtown Raleigh, regularly dines at El Taco Market. While there is a trend for authentic tacos, palates are changing as diverse cultures in North Carolina merge. As a Southern-born Mexican-American in Raleigh, Diaz combines ingredients to produce a menu featuring meals rooted in cultures on both sides of the border.

North Carolina is home to more hogs than people, and pork is one of the state's top agricultural exports. Pastured pork is a form of resistance against an industrial behemoth, one rife with poor practices and environmental disasters. To combat this, a small but growing number of people in the Triangle area are raising hogs with consideration for the animals' welfare as well as their flavor.
