Gaston with other leaders founded the North End Community Foundation to protect Druid Hills and surrounding neighborhoods in 2014 from a "city high on its own growth."

Douglas secured federal funds in the 1930s to build Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. President Roosevelt attended the Stadium's dedication in 1936. At the same time, Douglas also found funding for Charlotte Memorial Hospital., North Carolina's first municipal art museum (Mint Museum of Art) and the first subsidized affordable housing for Black Charlotteans in 1940.

"Five years after the furor of House Bill 2, the LBGTQ community--in Charlotte, in North Carolina, and across much of the nation--fights attacks on new fronts."The HB142 prohibition expired on Dec. 1, 2020. Several cities in the state have since adopted LBGTQ protections. It was Charlotte that originally fueled the fight for protections in 2016, leading to legislative reaction. At this point Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt wants to assure that a future ordinance will withstand legal challenges.

In 1946, Howard R. Biggers began an industrial development on Charlotte's Atando Avenue. where Quonset franchise holders purchased property to start Piedmont Steel Buildings.
